India’s Lovepreet Singh delivered a spirited performance to claim the silver medal in the men’s +110kg weightlifting event at the 2026 Commonwealth Games, finishing just one kilogram behind gold medallist David Liti of New Zealand.
Lovepreet registered a total lift of 388kg, narrowly missing the top spot as Liti secured the Commonwealth title with a combined effort of 389kg. England’s Andrew Griffiths finished third with a total of 356kg.
The Indian heavyweight laid a strong foundation in the snatch, successfully lifting 176kg to remain firmly in contention for the gold medal. In the clean and jerk, he cleared 205kg and 212kg before opting for an ambitious final attempt of 217kg that would have secured the title. However, the lift proved unsuccessful, leaving him to settle for silver after an impressive all-round display.
Liti, who recorded 166kg in the snatch, produced a decisive 223kg clean and jerk to edge ahead of the Indian by the slimmest of margins and clinch gold.
Despite the disappointment of missing the title by just one kilogram, Lovepreet’s silver added another medal to India’s growing weightlifting tally in Glasgow, underlining the country’s continued strength in the sport at the Commonwealth Games.
Hailing from Bal Sachandar village in Punjab’s Amritsar district, Lovepreet began weightlifting in 2010 after drawing inspiration from local lifters. Overcoming financial challenges, he steadily rose through the ranks before joining the Sports Authority of India’s National Camp at NS NIS Patiala in 2017.
The 28-year-old has previously won bronze at the 2022 Commonwealth Games and captured gold at the 2022 Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships, further establishing himself among India’s leading heavyweight lifters.
