Calls have intensified for an independent investigation into reports of civilian deaths, arrests and restrictions in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK), with rights groups and commentators urging the international community to take note of the situation.
An opinion piece published in Rising Kashmir alleged that residents of the region have faced prolonged political restrictions, censorship and governance-related concerns, while recent protests have highlighted demands for basic rights, economic justice and accountability.
The article claimed that authorities in the region responded to protests with restrictions on public gatherings, communication disruptions and arrests instead of addressing public concerns. It called for an impartial inquiry into allegations of killings, arbitrary detention and suppression of dissent.
The piece further argued that lasting peace could only be achieved through respect for democratic values, human dignity and the rule of law.
Quoting the article, writer Parimoksh Seth urged international human rights organisations, including the United Nations, to examine allegations of rights violations and ensure accountability for those found responsible.
Meanwhile, the United Kashmir People’s National Party (UKPNP) on Wednesday alleged that more than 40 civilians were killed and several others injured during a security crackdown in parts of PoK between July 27 and 28. The group claimed that incidents were reported from areas including Rawalakot and Mirpur.
The organisation further alleged that the number of deaths since June 5 had crossed 100, with several people injured and others allegedly subjected to enforced disappearance.
The UKPNP condemned the reported use of force against protesters and called upon the United Nations, European Union and the wider international community to support independent investigations and protection of civilians.
