Legendary Indian cricketer Sachin Tendulkar on Thursday praised Ajinkya Rahane for his remarkable international career, highlighting the former India captain’s calm approach, selfless attitude and ability to put the team ahead of personal milestones after Rahane announced his retirement from international cricket.
Rahane, 37, brought an end to a career spanning more than a decade, announcing his retirement from all formats of the game on Thursday. He is best remembered for leading India to a historic Border-Gavaskar Trophy triumph in Australia during the 2020-21 series.
Tendulkar, who shared the Mumbai dressing room with Rahane during the early stages of his career, recalled the batter’s commitment and willingness to take on difficult responsibilities for the team.
“Congratulations on a remarkable career, @ajinkyarahane88. The first time we batted together for Mumbai, I saw someone who never chased moments. They came to you because you were willing to do the hard yards for the team,” Tendulkar wrote on X.
He added that Rahane’s leadership in Australia reflected the same qualities, saying the former captain proved that composure can provide a team with the confidence to play fearless cricket.
Former India all-rounder Yuvraj Singh also congratulated Rahane, describing him as one of the finest players of his generation to represent India across formats.
Rahane made his international debut during India’s 2011 tour of England and went on to play 85 Tests, 90 ODIs and 20 T20Is. He scored 5,077 runs in Test cricket, including 12 centuries and 26 half-centuries, while also contributing 2,962 runs in ODIs.
His most memorable leadership moment came during India’s 2020-21 tour of Australia. After India suffered a heavy defeat in the Adelaide Test and Virat Kohli returned home, Rahane took charge and guided the team to a historic 2-1 series victory, including the famous win at the Gabba.
Announcing his retirement through a social media video, Rahane said he believed the timing was right to move on and thanked fans for their support throughout his journey.
“Cap 278 signing off. Thank you for all the love and support over the years. Forever grateful,” he wrote.
