India’s E20 ethanol blending programme marks a significant milestone in the country’s transition towards cleaner energy, enhanced energy security and sustainable development, according to an energy policy expert who said the initiative is aligned with global climate and clean fuel objectives.
Speaking on India’s Ethanol Blending Programme, Sanjay Kumar Kar, Professor of Management and former Head of the Department of Management Studies as well as former Dean of Faculty Affairs at the Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Petroleum Technology, said the biofuel initiative has evolved through a structured policy framework involving extensive stakeholder consultation.
Kar said the programme is consistent with the objectives of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 7, which promotes access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy. He credited the National Policy on Biofuels, introduced in 2018 and subsequently amended in 2022, for accelerating India’s progress towards achieving the E20 ethanol blending target.
Describing the achievement as the outcome of long-term planning and sustained policy support, he said the transition to 20 per cent ethanol blending has been gradual and backed by scientific advancements, government incentives and continuous efforts over several years.
Addressing concerns surrounding ethanol-blended fuel, Kar urged the public to focus on scientific evidence rather than misinformation. He said a better understanding of the programme’s long-term benefits is essential, particularly for farmers, vehicle owners and the environment.
According to him, the advantages of ethanol blending extend beyond individual interests by contributing to cleaner fuel, reducing dependence on fossil fuels and supporting broader environmental goals. He stressed that public awareness about these wider benefits would play a key role in the continued success of the programme.
Kar also described the ethanol blending initiative as an important step in India’s broader strategy to strengthen energy sustainability while contributing to global efforts to reduce carbon emissions.
