Kapil Sibal questions Amit Shah’s silence over alleged pellet gun use during students’ protest

New Delhi, July 30, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

Rajya Sabha MP Kapil Sibal on Thursday questioned Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s silence over allegations of pellet guns being used during a student protest in the national capital, saying the matter required a response from the Centre.

Speaking to IANS on the Parliament premises, Sibal said that even if local administrative officials such as a District Magistrate or Sub-Divisional Magistrate were responsible for the action, the Home Minister should still address Parliament and explain the circumstances.

“Even if the District Magistrate (DM) or Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) takes responsibility, the Home Minister should still issue a statement. Why isn’t the Home Minister speaking? Because he has no answer,” Sibal said.

He questioned the authority under which pellet guns were allegedly used and said such measures could only be taken in exceptional situations after approval from competent authorities.

The remarks came amid a political controversy following allegations by Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi that security forces used excessive force, including pellet guns and lathis, against students during a July 20 protest march to Parliament.

During a Lok Sabha debate on the anti-paper leak bill, Gandhi alleged that Home Minister Amit Shah had ordered police action against protesters. He later demanded Shah’s removal from office and called for an independent investigation monitored by the Supreme Court.

Gandhi claimed that the Delhi Police and Rapid Action Force (RAF), which function under the Union Home Ministry, were involved in the alleged crackdown. He said the Home Minister would be responsible either for ordering such action or for failing to prevent it.

The allegations triggered strong objections from the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA), which accused Gandhi of making false claims and demanded an apology.
