Police used water cannons on members of Shri Rashtriya Rajput Karni Sena and their supporters during a protest march in Jaipur on Monday after demonstrators attempted to remove barricades while moving towards the Collectorate.
The protesters had gathered at Ravan Gate and started marching towards the Jaipur Collectorate to submit a memorandum over their demands, including withdrawal of recent UGC-related decisions and issues concerning the Savarna community.
The rally, led by Shri Rashtriya Rajput Karni Sena National President Mahipal Singh Makrana, was planned through the Panipech route. However, police stopped the procession by placing barricades near Kalwar Puliya.
A confrontation broke out when protesters tried to move ahead. Police used water cannons to disperse the crowd, while some demonstrators moved towards the water cannon vehicle. Despite the action, protesters removed the barricades and continued their march towards the Collectorate through the Jhotwara-Panipech route.
Authorities later increased security deployment and placed additional barricades near Chomu Puliya. Personnel from the Special Task Force (STF) and other police units were deployed to maintain law and order.
Organisers claimed that participants from 24 states joined the demonstration, with many supporters reaching Jaipur in buses and private vehicles.
The protest was organised as part of the ‘Savarn Nyay Yatra’ launched by Makrana against UGC-related decisions and demands linked to the upper-caste community.
Makrana had started his journey from Jaipur to Deshnok in Bikaner nearly 24 days ago. The march later took the form of the Savarn Nyay Yatra and reached Jaipur on Sunday. During the final phase, Makrana reportedly fell ill and briefly lost consciousness, but continued the programme while seated in a wheelchair.
On Sunday night, supporters held a torchlight procession from Govindpura to Bajrang Dwar before the main rally began from Kalwar Road on Monday.
The situation remained tense but under police supervision as protesters continued moving through the city.
