All India Muslim Jamaat President Maulana Shahabuddin Razvi Bareilvi on Monday criticised Bangladeshi author Taslima Nasreen over her recent comments on madrasas, terming her remarks as “hate speech” and saying she should not have a place in India.
Razvi, speaking to IANS, said madrasas had contributed significantly to India’s freedom struggle and accused Nasreen of making objectionable comments against these institutions.
The controversy erupted after Nasreen, during an event in Kolkata on Sunday, said she believed madrasas “should not exist”. She alleged that some such institutions were involved in producing “jihadis” and claimed incidents of child abuse had also been reported there.
Reacting to the remarks, Razvi said Islam had given women dignity, rights and respect, while questioning Nasreen’s criticism of religious institutions.
He also objected to Nasreen’s support for a Uniform Civil Code (UCC), which she said was needed to remove discrimination, particularly against women. Nasreen had also suggested that Bangladesh and Pakistan should consider adopting similar laws.
Razvi said the implementation of UCC in some states was a matter of concern for Muslims, alleging that it amounted to interference in Sharia-related matters.
Referring to Nasreen’s comments on madrasas, Razvi said history showed that ulema and madrasa students had participated in India’s freedom movement from 1857 to 1947. He alleged that describing madrasas as linked to terrorism was unfair and unacceptable.
Razvi further criticised organisations that supported Nasreen’s stay in India and objected to her being invited as the chief guest at an event in Kolkata.
Nasreen, who has lived outside Bangladesh for years following controversies over her writings, has frequently faced criticism from religious groups over her views on Islam and social issues.
