The Crime Investigation Agency (CIA) of Ferozepur police has arrested an alleged drug smuggler and recovered 3.540 kg heroin along with firearms during a series of operations, officials said on Monday.
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Bhupinder Singh said the CIA team acted on a specific intelligence input and laid a trap near Durgah Baba Malang Shah on the Ferozepur-Fazilka road, where the accused, identified as Gurjeet Singh alias Jeeta of Khai Pheme Ke village, was apprehended.
Police recovered the heroin from the accused’s possession, following which a case under Sections 21, 61 and 85 of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act was registered at Sadar police station under FIR No. 261.
During a subsequent search of Gurjeet Singh’s residence, police recovered two .30 bore pistols and four live cartridges, the SSP said.
According to police records, the accused has a history of involvement in narcotics-related cases. He has previously been booked in three NDPS cases registered at Sadar and Cantt police stations in Ferozepur and Suratgarh police station in Rajasthan.
Police said Gurjeet Singh is also wanted in another NDPS case registered at City police station, where 4.254 kg heroin was recovered under FIR No. 182.
SSP Bhupinder Singh said the district police is maintaining strict surveillance on drug smugglers and anti-social elements, adding that further action would continue against those involved in narcotics trafficking.
Earlier on July 15, the CIA had arrested two alleged smugglers and recovered fake Indian currency notes (FICN) worth Rs 17.35 lakh during another operation.
