Patna, August 3, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)
Jan Suraaj founder Prashant Kishor has registered his party’s first electoral victory by winning the Bankipur Assembly bypoll in Bihar, defeating BJP candidate Neeraj Kumar Sinha by a margin of 18,953 votes.
After 31 rounds of counting, Kishor secured 63,203 votes, while Sinha received 44,250 votes. RJD candidate Rekha Gupta finished third with 14,085 votes.
The Election Commission’s formal declaration of the result was awaited at the time of the latest update.
The victory marks a significant political milestone for Kishor, who contested an Assembly election for the first time. Bankipur, traditionally considered a BJP stronghold, witnessed a major shift in the bypoll outcome with Jan Suraaj emerging as the winning force.
Reacting to the result, Bihar minister and senior BJP leader Vijay Kumar Sinha said the party accepted the people’s mandate and respected the democratic process.
Sinha said the BJP does not blame institutions such as the Election Commission or Electronic Voting Machines when it faces an electoral setback. He added that the party would conduct an organisational review to understand the reasons behind the defeat.
He also highlighted that the NDA had won 202 seats in the 2025 Bihar Assembly elections, saying the Bankipur result should be viewed in that wider political context.
BJP Bihar president Sanjay Saraogi also acknowledged the verdict and said the party would accept the outcome with humility.
Saraogi said the BJP would analyse the reasons behind the loss and assess the expectations of voters. He maintained that development work carried out in Bankipur would continue despite the election result.
The Bankipur bypoll outcome provides Jan Suraaj with its first major electoral success and strengthens Prashant Kishor’s position in Bihar politics.
With the counting process completed, the official announcement of the result remains the final step before Kishor’s formal entry into the Bihar Assembly as Bankipur MLA.
