Senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Sukhminderpal Singh Grewal of Bhukhri Kalan on Monday resigned from the party’s primary membership, shortly after his name was omitted from the list of Punjab BJP office-bearers announced by the newly appointed state president, Kewal Singh Dhillon.
Grewal made his resignation public through a post on X, sharing a letter addressed to BJP National President Nitin Nabin through Punjab BJP chief Kewal Singh Dhillon.
In his resignation letter, Grewal said he had joined the BJP in Punjab in 1992, at a time when supporting the party required “courage, conviction and sacrifice.” He said that over the last three decades he had devoted himself to strengthening the party, often placing organisational responsibilities above his personal, family and professional commitments.
Stating that he had never sought power, position or privilege, Grewal said he had only wished to serve the party with honesty, discipline and unwavering loyalty.
Expressing disappointment over the current state of the party in Punjab, Grewal alleged that the values of commitment, sacrifice, respect and ideological loyalty were steadily losing their place within the organisation. He claimed that many sincere grassroots workers across Punjab felt neglected, unheard and disheartened despite years of dedicated service.
He further said it was painful to witness committed party workers losing hope after spending their best years strengthening the organisation. According to him, the morale of loyal karyakartas had suffered considerably, something he said should concern everyone interested in the party’s long-term future.
Grewal wrote that even during the BJP’s most difficult political years in Punjab, he had never experienced such a discouraging internal atmosphere. He said he could no longer reconcile the present circumstances with the ideals that had inspired him to join the party more than three decades ago.
Describing his resignation as neither impulsive nor motivated by personal ambition, Grewal said the decision followed prolonged reflection and deep anguish. He added that much remained unsaid and that he would share his experiences and the reasons behind his decision at an appropriate time.
Calling his resignation an expression of “deep disappointment and principled protest,” Grewal requested the party leadership to accept his resignation with immediate effect.
