Union Minister for Communications and Development of North Eastern Region Jyotiraditya M. Scindia on Monday met ace weightlifter Mirabai Chanu after she created history by winning her third consecutive Commonwealth Games gold medal in Glasgow.
Congratulating Chanu on the achievement, Scindia praised her dedication, discipline and perseverance, describing her success as an inspiration for young athletes across the country, especially in the Northeast.
During the interaction, Chanu shared her journey, including the challenges she faced on her path to becoming one of India’s leading sportspersons. The minister discussed various aspects of elite sports performance with her, including training methods, nutrition, recovery and the importance of rest and sleep.
Scindia also acknowledged the role of Chanu’s coach, trainer and physiotherapist, highlighting the importance of expert support and scientific approaches in achieving international sporting success.
The minister discussed the government’s efforts to strengthen the sports ecosystem in the Northeastern region through the High Level Task Force (HLTF) established by the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region.
Under the proposed ‘One State, One Sport’ initiative, each Northeastern state will be encouraged to develop excellence in sports disciplines where it has a competitive advantage, including weightlifting, archery and football.
Scindia said developing sporting excellence requires more than infrastructure and must include quality coaching, sports science, nutrition, recovery support and athlete development programmes.
He said providing young athletes with world-class facilities and training opportunities within the region would encourage more talent from the Northeast to pursue competitive sports and produce champions like Mirabai Chanu.
Chanu’s coach Vijay Sharma also highlighted the potential of athletes from the region and said such initiatives would help identify and nurture talent at the grassroots level.
The meeting reaffirmed the government’s focus on strengthening sports infrastructure, coaching systems and athlete support mechanisms in the Northeast.
