Gangster Sujit Sinha Killed in Jamtara Encounter, Alert Issued Across Jharkhand

Jamtara/Ranchi, August 3, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

Jharkhand Police have sounded an alert in several districts after gangster Sujit Sinha, one of the state’s most wanted organised crime figures, was killed in a late-night encounter in Jamtara district.

Security has been strengthened in sensitive districts, including Dhanbad, Ranchi, Palamu, Ramgarh and Jamtara, amid apprehensions that members of Sinha’s gang or rival criminal groups could attempt to disturb law and order following his death.

Police said Sinha was being shifted from Sahibganj Divisional Jail to Dhanbad Divisional Jail on Sunday evening when the incident took place on the Sahibganj-Govindpur National Highway.

According to officials, a tyre of an escort vehicle developed a puncture near Supaidih and Kendbona in Jamtara district. During the process of transferring Sinha to another vehicle, he allegedly snatched a weapon from a security personnel and attempted to escape.

Police claimed that Sinha opened fire at the escort team, following which personnel retaliated. He suffered critical injuries during the exchange of fire and later died.

The encounter site has been secured by Jamtara Police, where forensic teams collected evidence and documented the scene. Senior officials also inspected the location and reviewed the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Sinha’s body was sent for postmortem, which is being conducted by a board of doctors as per National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) guidelines. The procedure is being videographed, and a magisterial inquiry into the encounter has been initiated.

A native of Medininagar in Palamu district, Sinha was accused in more than 75 criminal cases, including murder, extortion, kidnapping and violations under the Arms Act. Police said he had allegedly continued operating his criminal network from prison despite serving a life sentence in the Palamu double murder case.

Investigators have alleged that his syndicate was involved in extortion targeting coal traders, contractors, builders and businessmen across several districts. Police have also been probing alleged links between Sinha’s network and absconding gangster Prince Khan’s gang.

Following his death, intelligence units have been placed on alert as authorities focus on preventing any revival of organised criminal activities linked to the syndicate.
