Three newborns died after a fire broke out in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) of the District Women’s Hospital in Maharashtra’s Amravati in the early hours of Monday. Six other infants were shifted to a nearby Super Speciality Hospital for treatment.
The fire reportedly broke out around 3.30 a.m. on the third floor of the hospital after an explosion in a ventilator. At the time, 39 newborns were undergoing treatment in the Special Newborn Care Unit on the floor.
Doctors, nurses and other hospital staff immediately rushed to the affected ward and began evacuating the infants. Medical equipment was disconnected and the newborns were moved to safety as the rescue operation continued.
The three infants died after suffering severe burns and smoke inhalation, while six critically affected newborns were shifted to the Super Speciality Hospital for further medical care.
The exact cause of the ventilator explosion and the subsequent fire has not yet been established. Authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The tragedy has raised concerns over fire safety and emergency preparedness at the hospital, particularly in a critical-care facility housing vulnerable newborns. Authorities are expected to examine the functioning of fire-safety systems and the circumstances leading to the equipment failure.
Amravati District Guardian Minister and Revenue Minister Chandrashekar Bawankule expressed grief over the deaths and conveyed condolences to the families of the victims. He said a comprehensive inquiry had been ordered and directed the district administration to ensure proper medical care for the affected infants and necessary assistance to their families.
