A 28-year-old man from Punjab was shot dead in Brooklyn, New York, while delivering a pizza, with the Indian Consulate General in New York expressing grief over his death and assuring his family of all possible assistance.
Gurdeep Singh, a native of Kapurthala, was fatally shot on August 21 while he was out making a pizza delivery, according to local reports. The incident is suspected to have occurred during an attempted robbery.
Police responding to the incident found Singh suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest. He was taken to a hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead. The suspected assailant fled the scene and no arrests have been reported so far.
According to an NDTV report, Singh had travelled to the United States about 13 years ago after taking a loan, with the aim of earning a livelihood and supporting his parents in India.
The Indian Consulate General in New York said it was in contact with Singh’s family and was extending assistance.
“We are deeply saddened to learn about the untimely demise of Mr Gurdeep Singh, an Indian national, who tragically lost his life in a shooting incident in Brooklyn, New York,” the Consulate said in a post on X.
“Our thoughts and heartfelt condolences are with his family during this difficult time. The Consulate is in touch with the family and is extending all possible assistance,” it added.
Police are examining CCTV footage from the neighbourhood in an effort to identify the suspect. The investigation into the shooting is underway, and further details are awaited.
