Karnataka: Hassan DC responds to Revanna’s remarks with cryptic social media post

A war of words appears to be brewing between Hassan Deputy Commissioner K.S. Latha Kumari and JD(S) MLA H.D. Revanna after the legislator questioned the officer’s appointment and functioning in the district.

Latha Kumari took to social media platform X and shared a cryptic message that read, “If they are not able to control you, they will start hating you.” Although she did not name Revanna or directly refer to his remarks, the post came days after the JD(S) leader publicly criticised her.

Revanna, while speaking to the media in Hassan on Friday, questioned the Deputy Commissioner’s functioning in connection with the reservation process for the upcoming Gram Panchayat elections.

“I have worked as an MLA for 30 years, and I have never seen such a Deputy Commissioner. I do not know from where they have brought her and posted her here,” Revanna said.

He also questioned whether the officer was functioning impartially across all Assembly constituencies in Hassan district.

The remarks were made in the presence of other JD(S) leaders and have drawn attention following the Deputy Commissioner’s social media post. The episode has also added a political dimension to the ongoing debate over the Gram Panchayat election reservation process.

Revanna is the son of former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda and brother of Union Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy. The Gowda family has a long-standing political base in Hassan district.

The latest episode also brings back memories of the earlier friction between Revanna and senior IAS officer Rohini Sindhuri during her tenure as Hassan Deputy Commissioner from 2017 to 2019. Sindhuri had taken action against alleged illegal sand storage and mining activities and faced criticism from political quarters over her administrative decisions.

Revanna, who was then the district in-charge minister, had publicly criticised her functioning and sought her transfer on multiple occasions. Sindhuri subsequently challenged her transfer through legal and administrative forums.

The latest exchange between Revanna and Latha Kumari comes at a time when administrative decisions concerning local elections are already under political scrutiny.
