Karnataka Planning and Statistics Minister B. Nagendra on Friday hinted at a possible resignation amid the controversy over alleged irregularities in the Karnataka Maharshi Valmiki Scheduled Tribes Development Corporation, saying he would first meet Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar and discuss the matter in detail.
Nagendra, who returned to Bengaluru from Delhi, said he would not take any step that could embarrass his party. He also said he was not intimidated by what he termed “false threats” from the BJP and would address the controversy at a press conference after meeting the Chief Minister.
“I will not be scared of the BJP’s false threats. I will hold a press conference. I am going to meet the Chief Minister. The party should not be embarrassed because of me. I will discuss the matter in detail with the Chief Minister,” Nagendra told reporters after arriving at Bengaluru International Airport.
Asked specifically about reports that he could resign, Nagendra said he would take a decision only after consulting Shivakumar.
“I will first discuss it with the Chief Minister. Once I speak to him in detail about the matter, I will take the next step,” he said.
Nagendra’s remarks came as the BJP and JD(S) stepped up their demand for his resignation and announced a 185-km protest march over the alleged tribal welfare irregularities.
The minister has also scheduled a press conference at Vidhana Soudha later in the evening, where he is expected to clarify his position on the resignation issue.
Nagendra also said his political fight against “Manuvadis” would continue, stating, “The fight with the Manuvadis is like this,” without elaborating.
His return from Delhi assumes significance as Shivakumar had earlier indicated that Nagendra would address the matter directly before the media. The Chief Minister had also said the issue had been left to the party high command and that Nagendra, who described himself as a “disciplined soldier” of the party, was prepared to make sacrifices for it.
While Nagendra’s latest comments have intensified speculation about his exit from the Cabinet, he has not formally announced his resignation. His meeting with Shivakumar and subsequent press conference are expected to clarify his next move.
