Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday visited the Mahatma Gandhi Centre at the Tashkent State University of Oriental Studies during his two-day State visit to Uzbekistan.
Modi interacted with Indologists and students at the centre and also signed the visitors’ book.
Earlier in the day, the Prime Minister paid tribute to former Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri at the Shastri Memorial in Tashkent. Shastri served as India’s Prime Minister from June 9, 1964, to January 11, 1966, and is remembered for coining the slogan “Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan”.
In a post on X, Modi said he paid homage to Shastri and recalled his unwavering commitment to the nation.
Modi also held delegation-level talks with Uzbekistan President Shavkat Mirziyoyev at the Presidential Palace, reviewing the entire spectrum of bilateral relations. According to the Ministry of External Affairs, discussions covered trade and investment, infrastructure, critical minerals, mining, defence and security, innovation, agriculture, pharmaceuticals, healthcare, information technology, digital public infrastructure including UPI, and education.
During the visit, Mirziyoyev conferred Uzbekistan’s highest honour, the “Oliy Darajali Do’stlik” Order, on Modi for his contribution to strengthening friendship between the two countries.
The two leaders also jointly planted a tree at the Presidential Palace under India’s ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ initiative and Uzbekistan’s ‘Yashil Makon’ green campaign.
Before the talks, Modi received a ceremonial welcome at the Presidential Palace. He also witnessed a special yoga session featuring 52 practitioners from Uzbekistan.
In a special gesture, President Mirziyoyev had welcomed Modi at the airport upon his arrival in Tashkent.
After completing his Uzbekistan engagements, Modi will travel to Kyrgyzstan for a two-day visit. He is scheduled to attend the 26th Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit and the opening ceremony of the 6th World Nomad Games.
