At least one militant was killed and six others injured in an armed clash between two factions of the Zeliangrong United Front in Manipur’s Noney district, while a separate grenade attack targeted an oil pump in Thoubal district, officials said.
The gunfight in Noney involved cadres of the Zeliangrong United Front-Kamson (ZUF-K) and Zeliangrong United Front-Jenchui (ZUF-J), according to a police official.
A self-styled second lieutenant of the ZUF-J, identified as 29-year-old Jangailing Gonmei, suffered bullet injuries during the clash and later succumbed to his injuries.
Six other ZUF-J cadres were injured in the exchange of fire. They were taken to a hospital, where their condition was reported to be stable, officials said.
Authorities were still ascertaining details regarding the condition and whereabouts of the other militants involved in the clash.
In a separate incident, unidentified assailants hurled a grenade at an oil pump in Thoubal district on Saturday evening. No injuries were reported.
According to police, the attackers arrived in a car and threw the grenade, which exploded near an oil tanker parked inside the petrol pump premises. Police have launched an investigation and are examining CCTV footage to identify and trace those responsible.
Meanwhile, a joint team of Manipur Police and Assam Rifles arrested two alleged cadres of the Kanglei Yawol Kanna Lup (KYKL) from Kakching district. The arrested men were identified as 26-year-old Yumnam Rohenjit Meitei alias Akui and 26-year-old Shakachand Yumnam alias Chand.
Officials said the two were allegedly involved in extortion activities.
Security personnel recovered two empty INSAS rifle magazines, 27 live INSAS rounds, a BAOFENG handset, two slings, a bulletproof jacket with a single plate, a pair of tactical boots and a magazine pouch from their possession.
Further investigation into the cases is underway.
