The Calcutta High Court on Friday directed the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to complete its fresh investigation into the August 2024 rape and murder of a junior doctor at R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital within three weeks.
A division bench comprising Justice Shampa Sarkar and Justice Tirthankar Ghosh issued the direction after examining a progress report submitted by the CBI during a closed-door hearing.
The agency had sought four weeks to conclude the fresh probe, but the court allowed only three weeks. The next hearing has been scheduled for September 24.
The fresh investigation followed allegations by the victim’s family that the CBI’s earlier probe had largely relied on the initial investigation conducted by Kolkata Police. The family had sought examination of 54 aspects of the case. According to sources familiar with Friday’s proceedings, the CBI told the court that it had so far investigated 16 of those aspects and outlined the work undertaken by its new probe team.
Among the matters examined was the movement of a delivery worker who brought dinner on the night of August 8, 2024, to doctors working in the Emergency Department along with the victim. The CBI informed the court that the delivery worker had been questioned.
The agency also questioned four doctors who had eaten with the victim that night, the sources said.
Kolkata Police had initially investigated the case before the probe was transferred to the CBI following intervention by the High Court.
Sanjay Roy, a former civic volunteer attached to Kolkata Police, was convicted as the sole accused in the case and is serving a life sentence.
Following the victim’s family’s allegations regarding the CBI investigation, the Calcutta High Court ordered a fresh probe by a new CBI team. The agency subsequently constituted a new team and began investigating the case afresh.
