A Raksha Bandhan celebration at the District Reserve Guard (DRG) campus in Narayanpur carried a message of trust, reconciliation and peace as surrendered female Maoists tied Rakhis to police personnel and senior officers, marking a symbolic shift from violence to mainstream society.
The women, who had renounced Naxalism and the path of violence, tied Raksha Sutras to DRG soldiers as well as senior police officers during an emotional programme at the Narayanpur Police DRG campus.
The Rakhis were tied to the wrists of Superintendent of Police Sandeep Kumar Patel, Additional Superintendents of Police Akshay Sabdra, Ajay Kumar and Aishwarya Chandrakar, Deputy Superintendents of Police Ajay Singh, Avinash Kanwar, Manoj Mandavi and Ashish Netam, Reserve Inspector Mohsin Khan and Station House Officer Narayanpur Vineet Dubey.
The celebration offered a striking contrast to the area’s history of Naxal violence. The surrendered women, who once lived amid the shadow of guns and conflict, participated in a festival centred on affection, respect, trust and a pledge of protection.
The programme also highlighted the police department’s efforts to foster a sense of belonging among people who have given up violence and returned to mainstream society.
SP Patel, along with the officers and DRG personnel present, extended Raksha Bandhan greetings to the women and wished them a safe, dignified and bright future. The interaction was marked by cordiality and a sense of mutual trust between the police personnel and the surrendered women.
Patel said Raksha Bandhan represented more than a traditional festival, describing it as a symbol of trust, respect and the commitment to protect one another.
“It is our collective responsibility to provide respect and belonging to those who have returned to mainstream society and to instil new hope in their lives,” he said.
He added that Narayanpur Police was working continuously to strengthen an atmosphere of trust and brotherhood in society while maintaining security.
The celebration thus presented another picture of a changing Bastar, where former insurgents are seeking to rebuild their lives through reconciliation and integration with the wider community.
