Veteran actor Zeenat Aman has expressed concern for people affected by the devastating floods in Nepal while revisiting the enduring sibling-bond song ‘Phoolon Ka Taaron Ka’ from her 1971 film ‘Hare Rama Hare Krishna’.
Zeenat shared a scene from the film on Instagram featuring late actor Dev Anand singing the song for her character, his on-screen sister. Reflecting on Raksha Bandhan and the relationship celebrated by the festival, the actor opened up about a personal longing from her childhood.
She said one of the joys she had missed in life was having a sibling of her own.
“As a girl I always saw the sisters and brothers around me, and yearned for a sibling myself. I knew early on that I would have two children so that they would each have the other to turn to,” Zeenat wrote.
Sharing the song in celebration of sibling relationships, she described ‘Hare Rama Hare Krishna’ as a film that ended tragically but was, at its heart, about the bond between a brother and sister.
Directed by Dev Anand and produced under the Navketan Films banner, ‘Hare Rama Hare Krishna’ starred Anand, Zeenat Aman, Mumtaz and Prem Chopra. The film explored the counterculture and hippie movement, while carrying an anti-drug message and examining issues associated with Westernisation. It was influenced by the 1968 American psychedelic film ‘Psych-Out’.
The idea for the film reportedly came to Dev Anand during a visit to Kathmandu, Nepal, where he encountered hippies while he was feeling low following protests against his earlier film ‘Prem Pujari’.
Zeenat recalled that ‘Hare Rama Hare Krishna’ was shot almost entirely in Nepal, which has now been affected by severe flooding.
“We shot this film almost entirely in Nepal, and I can not sign off today without expressing my concern for the citizens of Nepal, and all those who have been impacted by the devastating floods,” she wrote.
She also urged those who were able to do so to support authorised relief efforts underway for those affected by the floods.
