Filmmaker Subhash Ghai revisited his long-standing bond with Poonam Sinha and Ayesha Shroff on Raksha Bandhan, describing the two women as his “strong Raakhi sisters” and recalling his association with their families over the years.
Ghai shared a picture featuring Poonam and Ayesha on social media and spoke about the special relationship they have maintained beyond the film industry.
“Nothing like a brother sister bonding: Raakhi. Especially in your professional world,” he wrote.
Recalling his connection with their husbands, actors Shatrughan Sinha and Jackie Shroff, Ghai said he had performed the kanyadaan at the weddings of both Poonam and Ayesha.
“I am so proud of my TWO strong RAAKHI SISTERS, Mrs Poonam Sinha & Mrs Ayesha Shroff. I did their kanyadaan on their marriage day with my two first heroes in Kalicharan and Hero — Shatrughan Sinha and Jackie Shroff,” he wrote.
Ghai said the families have continued to meet during Raksha Bandhan over the years and described having sisters in his life as a blessing. He also mentioned another sister, Sunita Bahri, in his post.
Highlighting Poonam and Ayesha’s achievements, the filmmaker recalled that both had won the Miss Young India beauty contest, with Poonam winning in 1968 and Ayesha in 1980. He described them as having gone on to become models and actors and later devoted mothers.
Ghai’s professional association with Shatrughan Sinha dates back to Kalicharan, the 1976 action thriller directed by him. The film, starring Shatrughan Sinha alongside Reena Roy, Ajit and Prem Nath, proved to be an important milestone in the actor’s career.
Ghai later introduced Jackie Shroff as a leading man with Hero. Released in 1983, the film featured Jackie opposite Meenakshi Seshadri and went on to become a major success.
Poonam Sinha, who was crowned Miss Young India in 1968, later entered Hindi cinema and married Shatrughan Sinha. The couple have three children — actress Sonakshi Sinha and twins Luv Sinha and Kush Sinha.
Ayesha Shroff won the Miss Young India title in 1980 before entering acting and film production. She married Jackie Shroff in 1987, and they have two children, actor Tiger Shroff and entrepreneur Krishna Shroff.
