As Raksha Bandhan was celebrated on August 28, Bollywood personalities and television stars opened up about the significance of sibling bonds, cherished memories and their plans for the festival.
Karisma Kapoor, who is currently a judge on ‘India’s Best Dancer Season 5’, said the festival reminded her of the special relationship she shares with her sister Kareena Kapoor.
“Raksha Bandhan is a beautiful celebration of the bond between siblings. My sister Kareena has always been my constant. From the little moments we shared growing up to being there for each other through every chapter of life, she will always be not just my sister, but a very special part of my heart,” Karisma said.
She added that she was proud of the woman Kareena had become and said celebrating Raksha Bandhan on the sets of ‘India’s Best Dancer Season 5’ with her brother Armaan made the occasion even more special, bringing back childhood memories. Karisma described having siblings who understand and support each other as a blessing.
Judge Geeta Kapur, who said she does not have biological siblings, said she has nevertheless always cherished the bond siblings share. This year, she celebrated the festival on the show’s sets with Paritosh, making the occasion particularly personal and memorable.
“Raksha Bandhan is a beautiful celebration of the unconditional bond between siblings, a relationship that is built on love, understanding, laughter, and countless memories,” she said.
Geeta said people who grow up together can become each other’s strongest support system, while people chosen as family can also share in one another’s happiness and provide support during difficult times. She linked that sentiment to her experience as a dance reality-show judge, saying encouragement plays an important role in a dancer’s journey just as sibling support can provide strength in life.
Jaaved Jaaferi, another judge on the show, said Raksha Bandhan brought memories of his brother Naved and sister Muskkaan to mind. He said sibling affection is often expressed through everyday conversations, teasing, shared memories and the reassurance of knowing that one has someone to rely on.
Jaaferi also credited his family’s love and encouragement with shaping him, adding that his experience on ‘India’s Best Dancer Season 5’ had reinforced his belief that strong support systems give people the confidence to dream, take risks and move forward.
Terence Lewis, who also serves as a judge on the dance reality show, said growing up with seven siblings had given him firsthand experience of the importance of brothers and sisters.
“Each sibling brings a different personality and energy into the family, but together, those relationships create memories that stay with you forever,” he said.
Lewis added that dancers, like everyone else, need people who believe in them and offer encouragement, drawing a parallel between that support and the role siblings can play in life.
Comedian and television host Bharti Singh said Raksha Bandhan remained particularly meaningful because of her siblings Pinky and Dhiraj. She described elder sister Pinky as her guide and someone she could depend on, while calling her relationship with Dhiraj equally precious.
Bharti also revealed that she ties a Rakhi every year to her spot dada, whom she considers family. She said she would also like to tie a Rakhi to soldiers, whom she credited with protecting families and enabling people to celebrate such occasions freely.
The festival is especially significant for Bharti this year as it marks her son Kaju’s first Raksha Bandhan. She said she was looking forward to creating memories with him. She also noted that her show, ‘Indian Game Show with Bharti and Harssh’, gives her an opportunity to celebrate fun, laughter and togetherness with audiences.
For Harssh Limbachiyaa, host of the show, Raksha Bandhan has also evolved into a celebration involving the wider family. He said Gola’s sisters have traditionally tied Rakhi to him and described the bond as one filled with love and affection.
Harssh said Kaju’s first Raksha Bandhan would make this year especially memorable. He also highlighted the relationship between his mother Rita Limbachiyaa and Bharti’s mother Kamla Singh, who tie Rakhi to each other.
He said the relationship between the two mothers reflected how the families had grown close and become one. For Harssh, Raksha Bandhan now represents not only the traditional brother-sister relationship but also the love, relationships and family bonds people build and choose over the years.
