Members of the Hindu diaspora held demonstrations in the United States and the United Kingdom, protesting killings and alleged persecution of Hindus and other minorities in Bangladesh.
The protests came amid concerns over attacks on Hindu communities in Bangladesh, including the recent killing of four members of a Hindu family in Rangpur city.
At a rally in New York’s Jackson Heights, members of the Hindu community expressed concern over the safety and security of Hindus in Bangladesh and called on authorities there to take immediate measures to protect minorities.
One protester urged the community to move beyond symbolic demonstrations, saying Hindus needed to stand up and resist attacks and “defend ourselves in our own way”.
Another speaker criticised the previous Muhammad Yunus-led interim government, alleging that its characterisation of mob violence as “mob justice” had emboldened criminal elements.
The speaker claimed that Bangladesh had become a “country of corpses” and called on the government to take steps to end violence against minorities.
A separate demonstration was held in London, where protesters raised slogans over alleged attacks on Hindus in Bangladesh. Demonstrators carried placards reading “Stop attacks on Hindus”, “Protect Hindu Communities”, “Hindu lives matter” and “Stop ongoing persecution of minorities in Bangladesh”.
The protests followed the August 20 killing of a Hindu family in Rangpur. The victims were identified as retired Rangpur Zilla School teacher Ganapati Chakraborty, 65; his wife, Pritilata Chakraborty, 50; their daughter, Agami Chakraborty Prarthi, 23; and their 12-year-old son, Priyam Chakraborty, 12.
Police recovered the bodies of all four family members on the night of August 22, two days after the incident.
The killings have drawn attention to wider concerns over the safety of minority communities in Bangladesh, particularly Hindus. The protesters alleged that attacks on minorities have continued since the tenure of the Yunus-led interim administration and under the current Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) government.
The demonstrations in the US and UK called for greater protection of minority communities and stronger action against those responsible for attacks.
