Actress Upasana Singh has spoken about alleged instances of disrespect during meetings of the Cine and Television Artistes’ Association (CINTAA), claiming she was belittled for not knowing English and was told that she was merely a “character artist” while others were “stars”.
Speaking about her decision to work for the welfare of members of the film industry through CINTAA, Upasana said she wanted to give back to an industry that had provided her with a platform and widespread recognition.
“I came here because I got a lot from the industry. I started from zero. I am a resident of Shyarpur, a small place. Today, if people know me all over the world, it is because of my career,” she said.
She said her aim was to work for actors as well as technicians and other members of the film fraternity.
Recalling what she described as insulting treatment, Upasana alleged that she was called “Tom, Dick and Harry” and was told, “You are a character artist and I am a star.”
She also claimed that remarks about her inability to speak English were used to demean her during committee proceedings.
“Such words were used for me. If you ever get time and the committee comes, then definitely see the minutes. They were told, ‘You don’t know English.’ Such words were used to demean,” she said.
Upasana also recalled an incident involving actor Deepak Parashar, alleging that he was left in tears following what she described as a rude interaction with CP Thakur.
“Deepak Parashar left crying. CP Thakur talked to him so rudely. After that, I had to take him to the hospital. He started having pain,” she said.
She claimed that she and others had endured such experiences for around two-and-a-half years, suggesting that the prolonged disagreements ultimately contributed to resignations.
Upasana has previously spoken publicly about her differences with veteran actresses Poonam Dhillon and Padmini Kolhapure in connection with CINTAA’s functioning. She has alleged that she felt disrespected during interactions within the organisation and raised concerns over the manner in which actors were treated.
