Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) president Advocate Harjinder Singh Dhami has expressed serious concern over reports that the historic building of Gurdwara Sri Guru Singh Sabha in Quetta, the capital of Pakistan’s Balochistan province, has been demolished to make way for a commercial shopping plaza.
In a statement, Dhami described the reported demolition as a serious matter and said religious and heritage sites associated with Sikh history in Pakistan were not merely physical structures but important symbols of the community’s historical identity and heritage.
He said Pakistan was home to numerous gurdwaras associated with Sikh Gurus, as well as sites connected with Sikh history and heritage. Converting such places into commercial properties after demolishing their historic structures, he said, amounted to disrespecting Sikh sentiments.
Dhami urged the Pakistan government and the concerned authorities to intervene immediately, stop the ongoing construction and ensure that the property of the gurdwara was restored to the Sikh community.
The SGPC president said governments had a responsibility to protect the religious and historical heritage of minority communities and ensure that their places of worship and heritage sites remained secure.
He also called upon India’s Ministry of External Affairs to raise the matter with the Pakistan government through diplomatic channels and seek appropriate intervention.
