India’s two-time Olympic medallist Neeraj Chopra has qualified for the Diamond League final after finishing sixth in the overall standings at the end of the league phase.
Chopra accumulated 12 points from two appearances this season. He missed three legs, including the Zurich Diamond League, but his points tally was sufficient to secure a place in the final.
Sri Lanka’s Rumesh Tharanga Pathirage won the Zurich meeting with a 92.07m throw. Germany’s Anderson Peters finished second with 86.93m, while Czech Republic’s Dawid Wegner took third with 85.16m.
Chopra competed in the Lausanne Diamond League earlier this month, finishing second with a throw of 88.05m behind Pathirage. He had earlier returned from a back injury at the Doha Diamond League, where he finished fourth with an 85.69m effort.
The Indian javelin star also won a silver medal at the 2026 Commonwealth Games with a throw of 85.83m, finishing behind Pathirage.
After the Commonwealth Games, Chopra reflected on his recent injury struggles on Instagram.
“There are throws that travel far, and then there are moments that carry the weight of an entire journey. The past 10 months have tested me in ways I never expected,” he wrote.
Chopra will now turn his attention to the Diamond League final in Brussels, scheduled for September 4 and 5.
He won the Diamond League final in 2022 with a throw of 88.44m, becoming the first Indian athlete to claim the title. He finished runner-up in 2023 with 83.80m, losing to Jakub Vadlejch, and also secured second-place finishes in the 2024 and 2025 finals.
Chopra made history at the Tokyo Olympics by becoming the first Indian track-and-field athlete to win an Olympic gold medal. He later added an Olympic silver medal to his record.
