New Delhi, August 28, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)
More than 7 crore income tax returns (ITRs) have been filed for Assessment Year (AY) 2026-27, the Income Tax Department said on Friday as it urged taxpayers with business or professional income to complete their filings before the August 31 deadline.
The department said August 31, 2026, is the due date for taxpayers earning business or professional income whose accounts are not required to be audited.
“Over 7 Crore ITRs have already been filed for A.Y. 2026-27!” the Income Tax Department said in a post on X.
It advised taxpayers covered under the non-audit category not to wait until the final day and encouraged them to submit their returns at the earliest.
The latest reminder comes as the August 31 deadline approaches for taxpayers with business or professional income who are not subject to tax audit requirements.
The department had earlier reported that more than 5.9 crore ITRs for AY 2026-27 were filed by July 31, the deadline applicable to individuals and entities whose accounts were not required to be audited.
“Thank you, taxpayers! Over 5.9 crore ITRs were filed for AY 2026-27 by July 31st! Your trust and timely compliance provide the energy that fuels India’s growth,” the department had said in an X post.
The latest figures show a substantial increase in filings since the July 31 deadline. More than 40 lakh returns were reportedly filed on July 31 alone as taxpayers moved to meet the deadline.
With the August 31 due date nearing, the department has again asked eligible taxpayers with business or professional income to complete their non-audit ITR filings without waiting until the last minute.
