Nepal authorities on Friday issued a fresh flood warning after the flow of water mixed with debris and mud increased again in the Bhote Koshi River in Rasuwa, where a major flood struck two days earlier.
The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA) said it had received information indicating a renewed rise in the debris-laden water flow in the same area affected by the August 26 flooding.
The authority warned that the development could trigger another flood and urged rescue and relief personnel working along the Bhote Koshi and Trishuli rivers, as well as people remaining in high-risk locations, to exercise extreme caution and move immediately to safer areas if they detect any danger.
Nepal Police separately issued an alert after receiving a report of a lake outburst in the Tibetan region of China, urging people and rescue teams to remain vigilant.
The latest warning comes as Nepal continues to deal with the aftermath of the August 26 disaster. NDRRMA said earlier on Friday that at least 469 people had been killed and 977 remained out of contact. Among those unaccounted for, 517 were foreign nationals.
The Water Resources Research and Development Centre under Nepal’s Ministry of Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation had earlier warned that a lake formed after the river was blocked in the Upper Bhote Koshi area had not completely drained.
Citing information received from the Chinese side, the centre said the possibility of another surge in water flow could not be ruled out and called for continuous monitoring of the Bhote Koshi-Trishuli river system.
It also said the situation at the river blockage site had not fully returned to normal, meaning the risk to the Bhote Koshi, Trishuli and Narayani river systems could not yet be considered to have completely subsided.
Authorities have consequently placed security personnel engaged in rescue and relief operations along the Bhote Koshi and Trishuli rivers on heightened alert.
