The BJP on Friday defended National Vice President Ram Madhav’s claim that Gen Z has a significant presence in the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and its affiliated organisations, calling it a “factual reality”. The Opposition, however, rejected the assertion and claimed that young people have little faith in the BJP and its affiliates.
Madhav, in an interview with NDTV, said Gen Z participation was not confined to the youth who took part in a recent protest at Jantar Mantar. He described the RSS as a major youth organisation and said young people were present in large numbers in the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP).
Backing him, BJP national spokesperson Guru Prakash told IANS that the number of young participants seen at Jantar Mantar was relatively small compared with the wider youth participation in organisations associated with the BJP and RSS.
“This is absolutely true,” Prakash said, citing the ABVP, Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) and other affiliated organisations. He also described the ABVP as the oldest and largest student organisation in the world and said youth participation extended to organisations such as Sanskaar Bharati and Vishwa Samvad Kendra.
BJP MP Brij Lal also supported Madhav’s contention, saying young people could be seen participating in RSS shakhas and were attracted by its emphasis on nationalism. He accused the Opposition of attempting to provoke youth and create a “false narrative” that contributed to vandalism.
BJP MP Praveen Khandelwal said Prime Minister Narendra Modi had recognised the importance of young people, including through support for startups, and maintained that the government was committed to their aspirations.
The Opposition disputed these claims. Samajwadi Party spokesperson Fakhrul Hasan Chand said Gen Z had “does not have even one per cent trust” in the BJP, its affiliated organisations or those associated with them.
Congress MP Imran Masood described the Jantar Mantar agitation as “just a trailer”, saying young people across the country were frustrated over concerns about their future.
