The death toll from the devastating floods in Nepal’s Bhotekoshi region has risen to 469, while 977 people remain out of contact, according to the latest update issued by the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA) on Friday.
The floods, believed to have been triggered by an avalanche on a transboundary river between Nepal and China upstream of the Bhote Koshi River, have caused widespread destruction along downstream riverbanks, sweeping away settlements, roads, hydropower projects, transmission infrastructure and other facilities.
The NDRRMA said 469 bodies have been recovered from several districts. Chitwan recorded the highest number at 178, followed by Nawalparasi East with 110. Gorkha reported 44 deaths, Nuwakot 37, Tanahun 28, Nawalparasi West 27, Dhading 23 and Rasuwa 12.
Of the 977 people still out of contact, 517 are foreign nationals. India’s Ministry of External Affairs said on Thursday that 290 Indians remained uncontactable. The US said around 90 Americans may have been affected, while China reported that nearly 100 Chinese nationals remained missing on the Nepalese side.
The NDRRMA said 127 Nepalis residing abroad were also among those missing. The list of people out of contact includes 28 Nepal Police personnel, 45 Nepal Army personnel, 13 Armed Police Force personnel, 15 Customs Office employees and four Immigration Office staff.
At least 73 people have been injured, including 43 in Rasuwa, 27 in Nuwakot and three in Dhading.
A total of 13,295 security personnel have been deployed for search, rescue and relief operations. Rescue teams have so far evacuated 3,253 people, while helicopters are being used to rescue stranded residents and transport relief supplies.
Meanwhile, Nepal’s Prime Minister’s Office urged individuals and organisations seeking to assist with relief and rescue operations to coordinate in advance with the concerned District Administration Office.
The PMO said uncoordinated movement of private vehicles carrying small quantities of relief materials had caused severe traffic congestion, obstructing ambulances and delaying government rescue teams and priority relief vehicles.
