Punjab Police have busted two separate weapons and narcotics smuggling modules, arresting six people and recovering 2.9 kg of heroin, eight high-end pistols and six cartridges, Director General of Police Gaurav Yadav said on Friday.
The operations were carried out by the Counter Intelligence and Special Operation Cell teams. Preliminary investigation has indicated that the suspects were allegedly involved in cross-border smuggling and received consignments through drones before distributing them among criminals in Punjab, the DGP said.
Police are now investigating the wider network to identify other individuals linked to the cross-border smuggling operation.
Giving details of the first operation, Assistant Inspector General Sukhminder Singh Mann said Counter Intelligence Amritsar received information that suspects Sunil Masih and Rajan Masih had allegedly received a large consignment of illegal pistols and were planning to deliver them to their associate Pardeep Singh.
Police intercepted the three and recovered seven pistols, he said.
In the second operation, Special Operation Cell teams arrested Inderpal Singh, Sikandarjit Singh and Happy Singh alias Veerpal Singh. The operation resulted in the recovery of 2.9 kg heroin and one pistol, AIG Mann said.
The police officer said a detailed investigation was underway to determine the full extent of the smuggling network and that further arrests and recoveries were expected.
Police identified those arrested in the two operations as Inderpal Singh, Sikandarjit Singh, Happy Singh alias Veerpal Singh, Sunil Masih, Rajan Masih and Pardeep Singh. However, the police release also lists Pardeep Singh among the named accused while describing the first operation as involving the trio of Sunil, Rajan and Pardeep.
Two FIRs have been registered at the Special Operation Cell police station in Amritsar under Sections 25 and 25(8) of the Arms Act; Sections 61(2) and 111 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita; Sections 21, 25 and 29 of the NDPS Act; and Sections 25, 26, 27, 28 and 29 of the Bharatiya Vayuyan Adhiniyam.
The investigation is continuing.
