Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi has urged Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis to intervene in the ongoing hunger strike by Adivasi students, who have been protesting for more than 10 days over alleged discriminatory hostel rules, safety concerns and poor living conditions.
In a letter to Fadnavis, Gandhi raised concerns over the issues highlighted by tribal students at an “Echo of Students” event in Pune. According to Gandhi, the students have complained about an age limit of 30 years for hostel accommodation, humiliating rules, unsafe facilities and inadequate provisions.
He said many of the students come from remote villages and towns and are seeking their “rightful entitlements” rather than charity. Gandhi urged the Chief Minister to meet representatives of the protesting students personally and resolve their grievances at the earliest.
Gandhi also objected to the rule barring students above the age of 30 from state-run hostels, saying it has affected tribal students pursuing higher education or preparing for competitive examinations.
He further highlighted alleged deficiencies in food, sanitation and medical facilities at hostels and referred to reports of student injuries and deaths, including fatalities attributed to snake bites.
The Congress leader also criticised a reported requirement for female students returning after prolonged absence to undergo pregnancy and medical examinations to establish their “fitness”. He described the practice as an affront to the dignity and humanity of the students.
Gandhi attached a memorandum outlining the students’ demands to his communication and called for immediate action by the Maharashtra government.
