Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Monday inaugurated the ‘Arpan Kendra’, an old clothes donation centre, at Punjabi Bagh West Metro Station as part of an initiative to promote garment reuse, recycling and upcycling.
The project has been launched in collaboration with the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) and the Delhi Metro Ladies Welfare Organisation. During the inauguration, the Chief Minister also reviewed the QR code-based digital system introduced for the clothing donation process.
Addressing the gathering, Gupta said the vision of a developed Delhi is not limited to infrastructure growth but also includes responsible citizenship, conservation of resources and environmental protection.
She said converting waste into useful resources is an important part of sustainable development, adding that recycling old clothes helps conserve water, energy and natural resources while supporting people in need.
The event was attended by Madipur MLA Kailash Gangwal, DMRC Managing Director Vikas Kumar, Delhi Metro Ladies Welfare Organisation president Shalini Singh and other officials.
The Arpan Kendra initiative was introduced on May 3, with plans to establish such centres at 10 major Delhi Metro stations. In the first phase, centres have been opened at five stations — Shalimar Bagh, Punjabi Bagh West, Mayur Vihar Phase-1, Shahdara and Rohini West.
A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has already been signed between the participating organisations for the implementation of the project.
Under the initiative, textile collection-cum-sale kiosks will allow citizens to donate usable clothes. The donation process has been digitised through a QR code system, under which donors will receive digital receipts for their contributions.
The Chief Minister highlighted the role of women’s self-help groups in managing the centres and participating in garment collection, segregation, recycling and upcycling activities. She said the initiative will promote environmental conservation while creating livelihood opportunities for women.
