The Calcutta High Court on Monday rejected the anticipatory bail plea of Sumit Roy, the absconding Personal Assistant of Trinamool Congress General Secretary and Lok Sabha MP Abhishek Banerjee, in a land-grabbing case registered in West Bengal’s West Midnapore district.
A single-judge Bench of Justice Tirthankar Ghosh dismissed Roy’s plea after the West Bengal Police registered a case against him in connection with allegations of grabbing and selling government-vested land in Salboni using forged documents.
Police launched an investigation after a complaint was filed against Roy and began searching for him. As he could not be traced at his known addresses, the West Midnapore district court issued an arrest warrant against him.
Roy subsequently approached the Calcutta High Court through his counsel seeking anticipatory bail. His lawyer had earlier sought an urgent hearing and requested a change of Bench, but the request was not accepted. The matter was later heard by Justice Ghosh’s regular Bench, which rejected the plea.
The West Bengal Police’s Criminal Investigation Department (CID) had issued a lookout notice against Roy in June this year.
On June 13, officials from Salboni police station reached Abhishek Banerjee’s residence in Kalighat, Kolkata, while searching for Roy. The police team, accompanied by central forces, entered the premises after waiting for some time and not finding him there.
Police sources said the last known tower location of Roy’s mobile phone had been traced near Abhishek Banerjee’s residence, following which the search operation was conducted. However, Roy was not found at the location.
The police also searched his in-laws’ residence in Serampore, Hooghly district, on the same day but failed to trace him.
