The Maharashtra Cyber Police have registered a First Information Report (FIR) following allegations that AI-generated and digitally manipulated videos targeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Minister Piyush Goyal were circulated on social media during recent student protests.
The case was initiated after a complaint lodged by a BJP social media functionary, who alleged that fabricated content was being shared online with the intention of spreading misinformation and provoking public sentiment.
According to police, the Maharashtra Nodal Cyber Police have booked unidentified persons under multiple provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including Sections 318(2), 336, 352, 353(1), 353(2), 356(1) and 356(2), along with Sections 66(D) and 67 of the Information Technology Act. An investigation is underway to identify those responsible for creating and disseminating the content.
The complaint stated that a Facebook account operating under the name “Maharashtra Dharma” shared a video claiming that Union Minister Piyush Goyal had advocated publicly hanging student protesters while referring to them as “cockroaches.”
The complainant said the clip appeared to show the minister making inflammatory remarks but, after comparing it with the original footage released by a news agency, concluded that the video had allegedly been altered using digital manipulation or artificial intelligence.
The complaint also cited several other social media posts, including an allegedly morphed image of Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Facebook, an objectionable Instagram video, and another video containing abusive language directed at the Prime Minister.
Police said the content was allegedly circulated to mislead the public, create unrest and insult constitutional authorities. Cyber investigators are tracing the operators of the social media accounts involved, and further investigation into the case is in progress.
