The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has sought a detailed explanation from Meta over the temporary restriction placed on a Facebook post by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, asking senior company officials to appear before the government within the next seven to 10 days.
MeitY Secretary S. Krishnan said the government wants both a policy-level and technical explanation to understand the circumstances that led to the incident.
“India intends to convey its concerns directly to Meta and obtain a comprehensive account of the circumstances that led to the brief restriction,” Krishnan said.
He noted that Meta had already expressed regret over the incident and submitted a preliminary explanation. However, the government has sought a more comprehensive clarification, including details of the safeguards the company is implementing to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
The development comes a day after the Centre summoned a senior Meta executive following the temporary restriction on the Prime Minister’s Facebook post.
The post, published on July 23, addressed India’s youth and reiterated the government’s commitment to taking strict action against alleged NEET examination paper leaks. In the video message, Prime Minister Modi sought to reassure students that the government was taking firm steps to tackle examination irregularities.
Meta attributed the temporary restriction to a technical glitch and apologised for the incident. However, the government has maintained that the explanation provided so far does not sufficiently address its concerns.
According to Krishnan, Meta has informed the government that it introduced a new protocol from July 28 to minimise the possibility of similar incidents. The revised process includes additional oversight for content published by the Prime Minister and other high-profile accounts to strengthen safeguards against inadvertent restrictions.
The Centre is expected to review Meta’s detailed response after the proposed meeting with senior company officials.
