India’s interim head coach VVS Laxman has praised teenage batting sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi for his maturity and temperament, saying the 15-year-old has the potential to break international records with his continued growth.
Sooryavanshi was named Player of the Series after India completed a 3-0 T20I sweep against Zimbabwe. In the final match at Harare Sports Club, the young batter played a match-winning knock of 81 runs from 49 balls on a slow surface, helping India post 192/5.
Laxman said Sooryavanshi’s ability to assess situations and improve with every outing has been a key factor behind his rapid rise.
“Very mature. With each and every experience, each and every match, he understands, he assesses and he gets better,” Laxman said after the series. He added that the teenager’s innings in the third T20I reflected his understanding of conditions and ability to counter the opposition’s plans.
The former India batter said Sooryavanshi’s success did not come as a surprise, recalling his impressive performances for Rajasthan Royals in the 2025 Indian Premier League. Laxman said the youngster showed remarkable composure while handling the pressure of playing against some of the world’s leading cricketers at such a young age.
Although Sooryavanshi missed out on his maiden international century, Laxman said the disappointment would only motivate him further. He backed the youngster to achieve greater milestones, saying he has the mindset and ability to keep improving.
Laxman revealed that the Board of Control for Cricket in India’s Centre of Excellence has been closely monitoring Sooryavanshi’s development for more than two years, since before the 2024 Under-19 World Cup.
While praising his technical skills, Laxman highlighted the batter’s improved maturity and awareness as his biggest strengths. He, however, pointed out that fitness remains an area where the young cricketer needs further development.
