Union Sports Minister Dr Mansukh Mandaviya on Sunday congratulated Indian weightlifter Rishikanta Singh Chanambam for winning the silver medal in the men’s 60kg category at the Commonwealth Games 2026, describing his achievement as a matter of pride for the entire nation.
Rishikanta opened India’s medal account on Day 4 of the Games with a spirited performance, finishing with a combined lift of 264kg to secure the silver medal. Malaysia’s Bin Kasdan Mohamad Aniq claimed the gold with a Games-record total of 273kg, while Kenya’s Joshua Amunga Mboya took bronze with an aggregate of 260kg.
Taking to social media platform X, Dr Mandaviya praised the Indian lifter’s accomplishment and lauded his contribution to the country’s medal tally.
“Heartiest congratulations to Rishikanta Singh Chanambam on winning the Silver Medal in Weightlifting Men’s 60kg. The entire nation is proud of you!” the Sports Minister posted.
Rishikanta produced a standout performance in the snatch event, successfully lifting 116kg and 119kg before clearing 121kg on his final attempt. The effort established a new Commonwealth Games record in the discipline, surpassing the previous mark of 120kg. The record was later equalled by eventual champion Aniq.
In the clean and jerk segment, the Indian lifter opened with a successful 143kg lift but failed to clear 148kg on his second attempt. He made a final bid at 151kg, completing the clean but falling short in the jerk, leaving him with a total of 264kg.
Despite narrowly missing the gold medal, Rishikanta’s silver medal and record-breaking snatch performance marked an impressive outing and earned widespread appreciation from the country’s sporting fraternity.
