The Jammu-Srinagar National Highway (NH-44), the key surface link connecting Jammu with the Kashmir Valley, was closed for traffic on Monday following a fresh landslide in Udhampur district.
The landslide occurred in the Dewal area of Udhampur, with debris falling onto the highway and blocking vehicular movement. Officials said restoration teams and heavy machinery were immediately pressed into service to clear the road and restore connectivity.
The Traffic Department advised commuters to avoid travelling on the highway until they confirm the latest road status from official traffic control rooms in Jammu and Srinagar.
Authorities warned that unstable weather conditions and vulnerable terrain could trigger further landslides and shooting stones along the highway. Travellers were urged to rely only on verified updates from the J&K Traffic Police and avoid spreading or acting on rumours related to road conditions.
Traffic movement will resume only after the affected stretch is cleared and declared safe for vehicles, officials said.
NH-44 remains a crucial lifeline for the Kashmir Valley, besides serving as an important route for Shri Amarnath Yatra pilgrims and tourists visiting the region. Although rail connectivity has reduced the Valley’s complete dependence on the highway, road traffic continues to face frequent disruptions during adverse weather conditions.
Several stretches of the highway, particularly through the Ramban district, remain highly vulnerable to landslides, mudslides and shooting stones. Even moderate rainfall can often trigger disruptions, affecting movement along the strategically important route.
