Union Minister Pralhad Joshi on Sunday assumed additional charge of the Ministry of Education, expressing gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for entrusting him with the responsibility and saying he accepts the role with humility and a sense of duty.
In a post on X after taking charge, Joshi said, “Today, I assumed charge as the Union Minister for Education. I am grateful to Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi ji for placing his faith in me and entrusting me with this responsibility.”
“I accept it with humility and a deep sense of duty,” he added.
Joshi, who is currently serving as the Union Minister for Food and Consumer Affairs, has been assigned the additional portfolio following the resignation of Dharmendra Pradhan from the Union Council of Ministers.
The change comes amid heightened scrutiny of the Education Ministry over allegations of irregularities in competitive examinations and protests by students demanding accountability over alleged paper leaks.
The President’s Secretariat confirmed on Saturday that President Droupadi Murmu, acting on the advice of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, accepted Pradhan’s resignation with immediate effect under Article 75(2) of the Constitution.
Along with taking charge of the Education Ministry, Joshi will continue to handle the Food and Consumer Affairs portfolio.
Pradhan’s resignation marks a major transition for the ministry, which he headed during a period of widespread student unrest linked to examination-related controversies.
The government’s decision followed discussions with protesting groups, after which representatives of the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) announced an end to their agitation. Union Ministers J.P. Nadda and Dr Jitendra Singh held talks with CJP representatives on Saturday before a joint press conference.
CJP spokesperson Saurav Das later appealed to students to withdraw from the protests and return home, stating that the government had accepted the key demands raised by the demonstrators.
