Punjab Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) president and Cabinet Minister Aman Arora on Sunday appealed to striking employees of Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL) to withdraw their strike, saying the agitation was causing difficulties for farmers during the ongoing paddy transplantation season and affecting essential services across the state.
Arora said the Bhagwant Singh Mann-led Punjab Government remained committed to resolving employees’ concerns through dialogue and that a high-level committee constituted at the request of employee unions was already examining their demands.
Addressing a press conference, Arora said the strike, which began on July 21, had created inconvenience for farmers, domestic consumers, traders and the general public. He said nearly three crore people in Punjab were being affected as around 18,000 PSPCL employees had joined the protest.
“The government is always ready to listen to genuine concerns of employees. However, creating difficulties for the public to pressurise the government cannot be justified,” Arora said.
The Cabinet Minister said the government had already accepted several demands of power corporation employees, while the remaining issues were being discussed by the special committee comprising senior officials from the Finance, Power and Personnel Departments along with representatives of employee unions.
He assured that every genuine recommendation made by the committee would be considered positively by the government. Arora said Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann was personally monitoring the discussions, while Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema and Power Minister Harbhajan Singh ETO were also engaged with employee representatives.
Highlighting the impact of the strike on farmers, Arora said electricity disruptions during paddy transplantation had affected agricultural operations. He urged employee unions to continue presenting their demands but avoid actions that inconvenience ordinary citizens.
Arora also appealed to farmer organisations to play a constructive role in helping resolve the issue. He reiterated that all genuine demands would be addressed through talks while maintaining uninterrupted public services in Punjab.
