Traffic movement from Mumbai towards Delhi began through Rajasthan’s Mukundra Tunnel in Kota district on Monday, opening another key section of the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway for commuters and freight vehicles.
Developed by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), the tunnel is the widest road tunnel in Rajasthan and is expected to ease congestion in the Dara Valley, a stretch that has frequently witnessed traffic disruptions due to construction work and diversions.
The tunnel will allow vehicles to bypass the congested valley section, improving travel efficiency and reducing delays for both local commuters and long-distance travellers. The second tube of the twin-tube tunnel is nearing completion and will be opened after the remaining construction work is finished.
Once fully operational, the eight-lane tunnel is expected to strengthen connectivity between Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat while supporting faster movement of goods along the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway corridor.
The improved connectivity is likely to benefit industries and businesses across the Hadoti region. Agricultural markets, including Ramganjmandi’s internationally recognised coriander trade, are expected to gain from smoother transportation links. The Kota Stone industry and other stone-based businesses will also benefit from easier access to major markets in Delhi, Mumbai and Gujarat.
For safety reasons, vehicles carrying diesel, petrol, LPG, CNG, hazardous chemicals and other flammable materials will not be allowed inside the tunnel. Such vehicles will be diverted through designated routes to reduce the risk of fire or other emergencies.
The tunnel near Chechat will provide uninterrupted expressway access towards Madhya Pradesh, where most sections of the route are already operational. Only a few stretches towards Vadodara remain under construction.
NHAI Project Director Sandeep Agarwal said the Mumbai-to-Delhi traffic tunnel has been opened, while work on the second tube is progressing rapidly and it will be made available for public use after completion.
