Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader and Leader of Opposition in the Bihar Assembly, Tejashwi Yadav, on Sunday warned the NDA government in the state that his party would launch a major protest if criminal cases registered against students and other demonstrators during the NEET paper leak agitation were not withdrawn.
Addressing reporters in Patna, Tejashwi said the students had fought for a fair future by protesting against the alleged examination irregularities and deserved support rather than legal action. He noted that opposition parties, including the RJD, had backed the movement.
His remarks came a day after the Centre, following the third round of talks with the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), agreed to withdraw police cases registered against protesting students and provide written confirmation of the withdrawal of FIRs. The CJP subsequently called off its nationwide agitation after the government accepted its remaining demands and following the resignation of former Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.
Questioning the Bihar government’s stand, Tejashwi alleged that while the Centre had agreed to withdraw the cases, protesters in Bihar were still being detained. He claimed that students had been taken into custody across several districts and alleged that RJD MLAs, including his elder brother Tej Pratap Yadav, had also been detained.
The RJD leader warned that if all cases against jailed students and protesters were not withdrawn and those detained were not released by Monday, his party would launch a large-scale agitation.
Tejashwi also alleged that police action against demonstrators in several districts was excessive and claimed that “AK-47 was used to fire on students yesterday.”
Continuing his attack on the BJP-led NDA government in Bihar, he alleged that repeated paper leaks and examination irregularities had occurred under its tenure, citing recruitment examinations, the Bihar Public Service Commission (BPSC) and NEET among those affected. He asserted that such incidents would continue unless the present government was removed from power.
