The Amreli Cyber Crime Police have recovered Rs 11 lakh in a cyber fraud case involving an Indian national residing in Sydney, Australia, and returned the amount to the victim after coordinating with banking authorities.
The victim, Saurabh Jolly, originally from New Delhi and currently based in Sydney, had approached the Amreli Police through email in June after losing money in a failed gold purchase transaction. He had transferred Rs 11 lakh in April to an Amreli-based person for buying gold but did not receive the promised delivery.
According to Amreli Superintendent of Police Sanjay Kharat, the police acted promptly after receiving the complaint and initiated an investigation despite the complainant being located outside India.
“As soon as we received his complaint via email, we promptly launched an investigation and assured him of our full support. Our Cyber Crime Team coordinated with the concerned bank, pursued the matter continuously, and kept the complainant informed throughout the investigation,” Kharat said.
The investigation led to the recovery of the entire amount, which was subsequently credited back to Jolly’s bank account.
Inspector Kamlesh Khatana of the Amreli Cyber Crime Police said the recipient of the payment was an Amreli resident, which prompted Jolly to contact the district police despite being abroad.
“Saurabh Jolly transferred the amount for the purchase of gold in April 2026, but the seller failed to deliver the gold. In June, Jolly approached the Amreli Police via email because the recipient of the money was a resident of Amreli. We pursued the matter and asked the recipient to return the money. He eventually refunded the entire amount in July,” Khatana said.
Jolly later wrote to Superintendent of Police Kharat, expressing gratitude to the police team for their efforts and communication throughout the investigation.
“I never felt disconnected from the investigation despite being thousands of kilometres away, and the team’s prompt communication, patience in answering my queries and systematic approach was building my confidence,” he said.
He added that the experience enhanced his faith in the policing system and highlighted the importance of quick action in tackling cyber fraud cases.
The recovery comes amid directions from Gujarat Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi to police officials to provide immediate assistance to fraud victims and make all possible efforts to recover their lost money.
