Zimbabwe fast bowling all-rounder Brad Evans said he was determined not to let India’s teenage batting sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi register his maiden international century against Zimbabwe after taking a spectacular diving catch to end the youngster’s impressive innings in the third T20I.
Sooryavanshi was in dominant touch at the Harare Sports Club on Sunday, smashing 81 off 49 balls and appearing on course to reach the three-figure mark. However, his innings came to an end in the 15th over when Evans produced a full-stretch effort at long-off to dismiss him off Wessly Madhevere’s bowling.
“Obviously, big player and he is going to go on to do amazing things but I didn’t want him to get his first hundred against Zimbabwe so I put in extra effort there,” Evans said during the mid-innings interview with broadcasters.
Evans also reflected on his own bowling performance, finishing with figures of 2-41 from four overs. He admitted disappointment over his opening over, in which he conceded 15 runs, but said he recovered well during the latter part of his spell.
“I think I came back into my spell in the back end quite well. Was quite disappointed with my first over,” he said.
The Zimbabwe all-rounder added that his team took time to find the right approach against India’s strong batting unit.
“I think it’s taken three games too long to work out the best antidote against the batters. But it’s a world-class batting lineup and they keep coming. But I love the challenge,” he said.
India posted 192/5 in their allotted 20 overs on a slow surface, with Sooryavanshi scoring his second T20I half-century. The young opener also shared key partnerships of 75 runs with Ishan Kishan, who made 29, and 50 runs with Shreyas Iyer, who contributed 27.
Rinku Singh provided the late acceleration with a quick 25 off 14 deliveries as India moved closer to completing a 3-0 series sweep.
