The BJP and the Congress on Sunday engaged in a political war of words after Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi demanded accountability for the police action against students who protested in Delhi over the NEET paper leak and other examination-related irregularities.
The latest exchange followed Rahul Gandhi’s letter to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, in which he sought accountability for the alleged use of force against students who gathered in the national capital on July 20 to protest against examination paper leaks and recruitment-related concerns.
The BJP accused the Congress leader of attempting to politicise the issue instead of genuinely supporting students. BJP leader Mrityunjay Tiwari alleged that the Congress had failed to address the concerns of young people while in power and was now trying to provoke unrest for political gain.
He maintained that the Narendra Modi government had taken measures to safeguard the interests of students and ensure greater accountability in the examination system.
Another BJP leader, P.V.N. Madhav, also criticised Rahul Gandhi, claiming the Centre had already demonstrated its commitment to addressing students’ concerns. Referring to the resignation of the Union Education Minister, he said the government had acted decisively and accused the Opposition of continuing its criticism despite the steps taken.
The Congress, however, defended Rahul Gandhi’s demand, arguing that questions surrounding the police action warranted a transparent response. The party also indicated that the issue would be raised during the ongoing Parliament session.
Congress Rajya Sabha MP Praveen Chakravarty questioned the use of force against student protesters and sought an explanation from the authorities regarding the circumstances under which action was taken. He said Rahul Gandhi had raised legitimate questions and asserted that the matter would be pursued in Parliament.
The exchange comes amid continuing political debate over the handling of the NEET paper leak controversy and the response to protests demanding stronger action against examination irregularities.
