The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a widespread weather alert warning of intense monsoon activity across several parts of the country on Monday, forecasting heavy to extremely heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning and strong winds in multiple states.
According to the latest IMD bulletin, weather conditions are expected to remain particularly severe over the next 14 hours, with authorities advising residents to remain alert as monsoon activity intensifies.
The IMD has warned that wind speeds could reach up to 80 kmph in some areas, increasing the likelihood of uprooted trees, power disruptions, traffic congestion and waterlogging in low-lying locations. People living near rivers, coastal regions and other vulnerable areas have been urged to exercise caution, while those in hilly regions have been advised to remain vigilant against landslides and sudden rises in river levels.
In north India, widespread rainfall is expected over Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh and Uttarakhand throughout the week. Rainfall activity is also forecast to intensify across Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan, where several places may receive heavy to very heavy rainfall in the coming days.
The weather department has also cautioned residents in parts of Rajasthan and Uttarakhand about thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds, advising people to avoid open areas during adverse weather conditions.
Eastern India is also likely to witness active monsoon conditions. The IMD has forecast widespread rainfall over Odisha, Gangetic West Bengal, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim, Jharkhand and Bihar.
Among these states, Odisha is expected to experience the most intense spell, with heavy to very heavy rainfall and isolated locations likely to receive extremely heavy rain on Monday. Heavy rainfall has also been forecast for Jharkhand, while rainfall activity is expected to increase across Bihar during the week.
The IMD has urged state authorities to remain prepared for possible weather-related emergencies and advised the public to follow official weather updates, avoid unnecessary travel during periods of intense rainfall, and take precautions in flood-prone, waterlogged and landslide-susceptible areas.
