Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will travel to Washington on Monday for a meeting with US President Donald Trump, with discussions expected to focus on the situation in Iran and other pending issues between the two countries.
Addressing a government meeting on Sunday, Netanyahu said the visit was being held at Trump’s invitation. He added that he would also attend a memorial service for the late US Senator Lindsey Graham, whom he described as a longstanding and strong supporter of Israel.
“Tomorrow I will fly to Washington to meet, at his invitation, with President Trump, and afterwards to participate in the memorial service for a great friend of Israel, the late Senator Lindsey Graham,” Netanyahu said.
He said discussions with Trump would include “all pending issues”, particularly developments related to Iran.
During the meeting, Netanyahu also commented on the recent allegations against International Criminal Court (ICC) Prosecutor Karim Khan, who has faced accusations of sexual harassment. Netanyahu claimed the controversy had exposed what he called problems within the ICC and its prosecutor’s office.
Netanyahu said Khan’s actions against Israeli officials, including the issuance of arrest warrant requests against him and former Defence Minister Yoav Gallant, were aimed at diverting attention from the allegations. His remarks came after reports that Khan had stepped aside from some ICC responsibilities following the allegations.
The Israeli Prime Minister also said he had spoken with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Saturday night. According to Netanyahu, Rubio reiterated Washington’s intention to take action against the ICC, which he said threatened the sovereignty of democratic nations.
Netanyahu said he viewed the US position on the international court as a “positive development” and stressed the importance of raising awareness about the issue globally.
