A day after Dharmendra Pradhan resigned as Union Education Minister, Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray and Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) president Raj Thackeray on Sunday held a ‘victory march’ near Shivaji Park in Mumbai, with several leaders of the NCP (SP) also participating.
The march was organised following weeks of student protests over alleged examination irregularities and paper leak controversies, which led to demands for accountability from the government.
Addressing reporters during the event, Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Arvind Sawant criticised the NDA government, alleging that its actions had created an atmosphere of “hatred and arrogance” in the country.
Another Shiv Sena (UBT) MP, Anil Desai, said the student movement was not limited to seeking the resignation of a minister but highlighted deeper issues within the education system and the need for reforms.
“The movement raised serious concerns about flaws in the education system, which have existed for a long time and have wider consequences, including unemployment,” Desai said.
MNS leader Sandeep Deshpande said the younger generation had shown that citizens should not fear questioning the government.
NCP (SP) MLA Rohit Pawar, who joined the march, said the agitation brought together students and young people from rural as well as urban areas, sending a message about unity, democracy and accountability.
Several youths who participated in the procession said the movement demonstrated that citizens could demand answers from the government on issues affecting them.
Meanwhile, NCP (SP) leader Fahad Ahmad criticised the police action during the student protests in Mumbai. He said his party would raise the issue with the Police Commissioner and demanded action against police personnel accused of misconduct, along with withdrawal of cases filed against protesting students.
